About Eric Marcus
Eric Marcus is the author of Why Suicide? Questions & Answers about Suicide, Suicide Prevention, and Coping with the Suicide of Someone You Know (HarperOne, September 2010). He is also the author of several books, including Is It a Choice? and Making Gay History. And he is co-author of Breaking the Surface, the New York Times #1 best-selling autobiography of Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis. (For more information, please visit ericmarcus.com.)
Eric is a former associate producer for ABC’s “Good Morning America” and a former segment producer for “CBS This Morning.” He is a graduate of Vassar College and earned his master’s degrees in journalism and real estate development from Columbia University.
In December 1970, Eric’s father, Irwin, took his life at the age of forty-four after struggling with depression since serving in the Navy during World War II. Eric’s sister-in-law killed herself on Election Day in 2008.
In March 2014, after serving on the national board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for four years, Eric joined AFSP’s staff. During his 18-month tenure as Senior Director for Loss and Bereavement Programs, he rebuilt and re-launched all the department’s programs for suicide loss survivors and produced two documentaries on the experience of suicide loss (which can be viewed at Survivor Day Documentaries).
